12 Key Challenges to Watch Out For on This Route

1. Leaving the Test Centre (Look Left & Right!) 🔴
   Tip: People fail here. Treat it like a real road: glance left and right before pulling out. Check for priority vehicles (parked lorry often makes it tight).
2. Early Pull-Over in the Cycle Lane Area 🟢
   Tip: Broken white lines = you can enter. Don’t block driveways/drop kerbs. Watch for cyclists before pulling in and when moving off. Practice safe pull-ins/drive-aways.
3. Right Turn into Woodlands Road (Lane Entry) 🟠
   Tip: Use the checker-marked area with broken lines to filter; don’t cross solid lines. Get fully into the middle lane so you’re not blocking traffic.
4. Speed Bumps = Speed Choices 🟠
   Tip: No fixed number. If it thuSpeed Bumps = Speed Choices 🟠
   Tip: No fixed number. If it thumps, slow more; if it’s smooth, you can go a bit quicker. On a 30, many bumps mean ~20 (or less) is sensible.
5. Closed Junction Right onto Crab Lane (Creep & Peep) 🔴
   Tip: Very limited view. Stop early, creep forward, check left again, then go when clear.
6. Trinity Rise Hill Start 🔴
   Tip: Classic test spot. Handbrake, biting point, calm release. Don’t roll back.
7. First Avenue (Narrow + Meeting Traffic) 🔴
   Tip: Stay close to the kerb, expect buses/parked cars. If in doubt, stop and give way. Mirrors before moving out and back in.
8. Holmcraft Road Crossroads (Turning Right Rules) 🟠
   Tip: Green for you = green for oncoming. If turning right, wait in the middle until safe; don’t wait behind the line on green.
9. McDonald’s Roundabout (Both Lanes Can Go Ahead) 🟠
   Tip: Use left lane to go ahead. No markings? Hug the kerb. Signal off on exit. If you used right lane, move back left when safe (after exiting roundabout in the right not while on the roundabout)
10. Gaol (Jail) Square Spiral Roundabout (Follow TELFORD/A518) 🔴
    Tip: Lane discipline is everything. Hug the inside/kerb(right lane), read the lane text, and when it splits into three, choose TELFORD(hug left lane and stay left after this point). Never cut back inward.
11. Chell Road 20mph + Bus Lane 🔴
    Tip: Solid white line = do not enter. After the bus lane ends, mirror–mirror–signal–move left. Then mini-roundabout: give way to the right.
12. Station Minis + Left Past Tesco + Immediate Right After Lights 🟠/🔴
    Tip: Minis are easy to mess up — look right. After lights, don’t turn into oncoming lane early; wait until the white line before entering the right-turn lane.
13. Priority Sections & No-Entry Traps 🟠
    Tip: Watch priority arrows. If it’s their priority, let them through. No-entry ahead often forces a left — don’t fight it.
14. Big Island Back Towards A34 (Middle Lane → Outside/Kerb) 🔴
    Tip: Examiner-friendly route: middle lane feeds to outside by the kerb — stay by the kerb all the way to your exit. Don’t drift across lanes.
15. Speed Changes A34 (30 → 40 → 30 near Aldi) 🟠
    Tip: Up to 40 if safe; back to 30 before the sign. Aldi entry used for manoeuvres; treat the car park like a live road with a mini roundabout. 🟢 (Forward or reverse bay).
16. Return Lap: Back to Gaol/Station (Yellow Box & Lane Picks) 🟠
    Tip: Don’t stop in the yellow box; only enter if the exit is clear. For right at the mini, set up right lane early.
17. Final A34 Home Stretch (Narrow Lanes) 🔴
    Tip: Town centre = tight lanes. Keep perfect positioning, watch mirrors, don’t straddle lanes.
18. Left by the Big Tree → Industrial Estate → Range Car Parks 🟠
    Tip: Often busy (lorries/roadworks). Follow it round, then second car park on the left. End parking = just get it in safely — not marked for neatness.

Basford Roundabout

This test route includes Basford roundabout arguably the worst roundabout in Newcastle which is then followed by busy slip roads and tricky speed limit changes. If there is a driving test route worth knowing it is surely this one.

This route is in my opinion one of the hardest with a focus on awareness particularly with lanes, slip roads and speed limit changes.

Below you will see a picture of this driving test route along with a list of the hardest sections of the route.

Parked Cars and Lane Change: As you get to the end of the A34, there will be parked cars in the left lane. When you see them, move into the right lane. But don’t sit in the right lane all the way from the test center, or you will block everyone else from overtaking.

Lane Change and Busy Roundabout: As you get to the bus station, you might be asked to use the right lane to turn right at the Three Fish’s roundabout. Keep an eye on your central mirror all the way down this road so you know what sort of space you will have when changing lanes. Also, practice this roundabout turning right, as it’s a tricky one.

Worst Roundabout in Newcastle – Must Practice This! The hardest roundabout in Newcastle if you’ve never done it before. It really needs practice, but the golden rules are: hug the roundabout until you get to the 3rd exit, where your lane will split, and you will follow it into the left lane. Then, you will exit while hugging the outside of the roundabout. Always control your speed, as it’s downhill entering the roundabout, which makes everyone go too fast and leads to more mistakes.

Learners Always Miss This Slip Road: Learners always miss this slip road. Look for the 50mph sign at the start and check where it merges at the end. Practicing this will help.

Looks Like a Slip Road but Still 30mph: At the Stoke crossroads, you will be asked to do a U-turn back towards where you came from. As you exit the crossroads, you will enter a slip road, but this slip road is still only 30mph. Do not speed up until you pass the 50mph sign.

This is a 20mph Zone: Very well signposted but still often missed.

Don’t Miss the Give Way Signs!

Learners Get Muddled with Lanes Here: Three lanes lead up to a roundabout where you might be asked to go ahead to the 3rd exit. For this, you will start in the middle lane to enter the roundabout, which will then lead you into the outside lane on the roundabout. This can be very confusing for first-timers.
